To All Groton Residents

On the 16th of June, the 8th annual Brian Kane Wiffleball Tournament was held with outsized success. This   tournament is the sole fundraiser for our annual Scholarship awarded to a GD Senior. This year’s recipient was Curtis Odell.  Five scholarship winners were playing in the tourney.

To all of the people in town who make this one of THE best player-friendly  tournaments in the United States…we thank you sincerely! We have the finest group of volunteers assembled anywhere that donate time, money and the connections into needed equipment etc. They are simply the best and they all have a piece of Brian in their hearts.

I don’t wish to mention names but there is no happier moment for me each year then when one of the talented Bisceglia men simply bring all of the players to complete and reverent silence with the National anthem acapella.  It is a very moving moment.

Unlike last year, the weather was perfect and the outcome was, as well.

If you’re not aware of the nature of a Wiffleball Tournament it’s understandable. The underground of Wiffleball is a hotbed of nationally ranked teams that travel long distances for prize money and trophies. For example a SE Mass  renowned Team named DOOM has won our tournament 4 times.

But not this year, as DOOM was eliminated by Michael Kane’s team which brings great happiness to this household.

Of the 77 teams that participated (295 players) three of the top four teams are Groton/Dunstable based. We are becoming a source of very competitive teams. The Championship went to TEEMO Galvin  captained by Mick Galvin and joined by Matt & Tom Galvin and Tim Walsh. Home Run Derby was won  by Gerry Calca with 16 dingers.

All four semi-final teams are eligible for an August 25th New England Championship tournament to be held in Worcester. The other GD teams were led by Ron VanSchalkwyk and Rick Akins.

Again, deepest thanks to all that participated and special thanks to ALL of the volunteers and contributors.
